I really REALLY want Liz Cheney and the rest of the Lincoln Project/Never Trumpers to address the root cause of America’s descent into fantasyland delusion: FOX

If they’d just start consistently identifying Fox and the lies it peddles as the real enemies of America, we might actually start bringing at least some of our relatives back to reality.

Active Duty U.S. Marine Corps Officer Arrested for Assault on Federal Law Enforcement Officer During Jan. 6 Capitol Breach

WASHINGTON — An active duty U.S. Marine Corps commissioned officer stationed at the Marine Corps Base Quantico was arrested today in Virginia and charged with crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, which disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress in the process of ascertaining and counting the electoral votes related to the presidential election.

Major Christopher Warnagiris, 40, of Woodbridge, is charged with federal offenses that include assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers; obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder; and obstruction of justice, among other charges. Warnagiris will make his initial court appearance today at 2:00 p.m. in the Eastern District of Virginia.

I really hope Matt Gaetz get his comeuppance in re: his endless Florida Man shadiness and douchebaggery. Saying he needed to get his balls removed to him on Twitter appears to have permanently put the kibbosh on teleskiguy at Twitter. Almost 11 years I had that account, tweeted almost 50,000 times. Poof.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday will ease indoor mask-wearing guidance for fully vaccinated people, allowing them to safely stop wearing masks inside in most places, according to a person briefed on the announcement.

The new guidance will still call for wearing masks in crowded indoor settings like buses, planes, hospitals, prisons and homeless shelters, but could ease restrictions for reopening workplaces and schools.

It will also no longer recommend that fully vaccinated people wear masks outdoors in crowds. The announcement comes as the CDC and the Biden administration have faced pressure to ease restrictions on fully vaccinated people — people who are two weeks past their last required COVID-19 vaccine dose — in part to highlight the benefits of getting the shot.

The new guidance comes as the aggressive U.S. vaccination campaign begins to pay off. U.S. virus cases are at their lowest rate since September, deaths are at their lowest point since last April and the test positivity rate is at the lowest point since the pandemic began.

Italian court hands U.S. tourists life sentences for murdering policeman

Two American tourists were sentenced to life in prison by an Italian court on Wednesday for the 2019 murder of a policeman near their Rome hotel in a case that shook the nation.

Finnegan Lee Elder, who was 19 at the time, had admitted to stabbing Mario Cerciello Rega in the early hours of July 26, 2019, while his friend Gabriel Christian Natale-Hjorth, then 18, was tussling with another police officer.

However, the pair say they had acted in self defence because they thought the two policemen, who were not in uniform at the time, were thugs out to get them after a botched attempt to buy drugs.

Hmmm. Didn’t know the victim was a cop? Do they not know that it’s also against the law to kill drug dealers in Italy?

‘Lying As If We Are Morons’: Russian Demographer Calls Official COVID-19 Statistics ‘Disinformation’ (Radio Free Europe)

President Vladimir Putin was hopeful in remarks on May 10 about the coronavirus pandemic in Russia.

“The situation with the virus in the country, according to specialists, is stable,” he said in Sochi, urging Russians to get vaccinated.

According to official statistics as of May 12, there have been 4,905,059 coronavirus infections in the country and 114,331 fatalities. Those numbers, however, are widely regarded as severely understated.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova acknowledged in December that the country’s data was questionable. She estimated that 81 percent of the 229,700 “excess deaths” that Russia, according to official numbers, experienced in the first 11 months of 2020 could be attributed to COVID-19. That means the death toll would have been more than 186,000, while the Rosstat statistics agency was reporting a pandemic death total of just 57,000 at the time.

Many major retailers and other places around here (Academy Sports, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, most gas stations) have taken down the “Mask required” signs from their front doors.

Other stores that do still have them up (Dollar Tree, Dollar General) aren’t bothering to enforce them, apparently not even with their own staff.

I was at Academy yesterday picking something up and I was the ONLY white person in there (aside from some employees) wearing a mask.

Only some of the upper scale places (Target, some supermarkets) are still requiring and enforcing mask usage.

No, the Corps will wait for the federal case to conclude. And then likely charge and UCMJ specific transgressions and anything the federal prosecutors have chosen not to charge.
As it appears the Feds are not seeding jurisdiction to the military courts, the Corps will not wish to preempt the Fed’s case and raise the prospect of double jeopardy

LINCOLN — A legal opinion, as well as political reality, forced the dropping of a proposal Wednesday night to allow most Nebraska counties to authorize concealed carry of handguns without a state-required permit and safety course.

The so-called “constitutional carry” proposal was deemed constitutionally suspect by the Nebraska Attorney General’s office on Monday. That forced the sponsor of the bill, State Sen. Tom Brewer of Gordon, to drop the idea this year and amend the bill to include three less controversial gun rights measures.

“Be careful what you ask for,” said Brewer, in lamenting the last-minute legal dart that deflated chances for Legislative Bill 236.

Seniors at the University of South Carolina had already dealt with one disaster — the pandemic — when they took their socially distanced seats at the school’s commencement ceremony last weekend.

The university’s president, Robert Caslen, delivered a speech so bungled — with the wrong school name and closing remarks lifted nearly word-for-word from another famous commencement address — that it prompted widespread criticism from social media users to state legislators in South Carolina.

Now, less than a week later, Caslen has resigned.

Same question here.

My only answer is results oriented.

Those who are vaccinated will not end up hospitalized or dead from covid19. It’s results oriented. If you’re vaccinated, you’re not passing covid19 to others, and they can’t get you sick enough to kill you.

But if they get it, then they can and do end up dead. States with high vaccination rates are proving that out as the overwhelming majority of cases in ICU and deaths are those who aren’t vaccinated.

You find out when the non-vaccinated clowns get hospitalized. They’re the people that masks are protecting when sane people are vaccinated. They’re the people who will suffer when they fail to vaccinate and go out to maskless events.

Here’s what I don’t understand:

If you have to have proof of vaccination to enroll kids in school, why is it such a big damned deal to require it for work, air travel or public transportation, or to enter into any large scale facility with a crowd? Isn’t that why the CDC came up with the card in the first place? I even have a QR code on my phone I was given when I signed up to get shots from the National Guard unit at a mass vaccination location.

All these people freaking out over vaccines had to have them in childhood to go to school and if they ever had to travel outside the US to many countries, especially members of the military. I am all out of patience with fools.

Actually, they freak the fuck out about vaccines for their kids, too. They claim a “religious exemption”, which I feel is a patently ridiculous reason to allow children to skip their vaccinations (and I say this as a religious person with extended relatives who use this excuse), but that allows their kids to go to public school without being vaccinated.

Why the Children of Anti-Vaxxers Are Taking to Reddit for Advice (Pacific Standard, February 13, 2019)

“After spending a good amount of time researching and reading, I came to the conclusion that there was something strange going on,” Danny, now 16, told me over Reddit. (Danny, like the names of all the teens in this story, is a pseudonym.) Still, he wasn’t making much progress with his mother—so he turned to strangers instead: On the discussion website Reddit, he asked for advice on how to get vaccinated without her.

Like Danny’s mom, an estimated one in 10 parents in the United States are not following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommended vaccination schedule, forgoing or delaying their children’s protection from up to 16 diseases. This small but vocal anti-vaxxer movement has contributed to a 30 percent increase in measles cases worldwide, leading the World Health Organization to name “vaccine hesitancy” one of the top 10 health threats of 2019.

Children seek advice at r/LegalAdvice.

VERIFY: Law giving children consent over parents in vaccinations was in DC, not national (fact check by WUSA, CBS, Washington)

DC just passed a law allowing children to obtain vaccines without parental consent. This was falsely stated on anti-social media as the federal government passed such a law.

The DC law allows children aged eleven and up to seek vaccination without parental consent, provided they can provide informed consent.

This kind of law isn’t new at a local or even state level, either. A 2019 resolution to the American Medical Association notes 18 states that had laws allowing for “mature minors” as young as 12 years old to consent to vaccinations without parental approval. That resolution defined a “mature minor” similarly to D.C.’s requirement that the minor is able to comprehend the need for and risks of vaccines.

Religion and vaccine refusal are linked. We have to talk about it. (Vox, June 19, 2019)

Atheists are the least likely group to refuse vaccines.

More recently, that was confirmed in Pew Research’s recently-released Religious Landscape Survey.

There is a strong correlation in every nation surveyed between religion (regardless of faith or sect) and vaccine refusal.

No it isn’t. The UK has no national ID card.

Yep. You might want to expound on this, but the current UK news is that the Tories want to require voter ID, even though of course there is no problem to solve, for exactly the same reason that the GOP wants to do it.

We here on the Continent have mandatory national IDs, whether citizen or resident. It doesn’t cost you anything, and is required for exit/entry, employment, government services, and other things. When you move, you often will get a visit from the cops at your declared residence to make sure you actually live there. I’m sure the Economically Anxious would love that.

There are some religions that do prohibit vaccines. Christian Science is one. James Hetfield of Metallica just came out and said the only vaccines he ever had was when he went on a trip to Africa after he got rich and famous and would only get the covid vaccine if he had to to go on tour. Not helpful. Not sure if his kids and wife have been vaccinated. I just don’t think there are that many people who actually have a specific religious excuse. Most of it is bullshit. If that many kids had a religious exemption from getting vaccinated, we’d see serious outbreaks of various diseases, long before covid. I don’t think it’s religion as much as it is the political bullshit our media won’t stop featuring. YMMV.

Christian Scientists were the group which went around the country getting religious exemptions passed in statehouses in the first place, citing freedom of religion.

We have seen outbreaks of various diseases before Covid-19, particularly measles and whooping cough, almost entirely centred on religious communities in the USA.

Missouri Senate passes bill giving state some oversight of Christian reform schools (Kansas City Star)

Legislation that would for the first time give the state some oversight of Missouri’s unlicensed boarding schools is one step away from the governor’s desk.

In the final days of the legislative session, Missouri senators on Tuesday passed a measure aimed at stopping abuse at the state’s faith-based schools that for nearly four decades have been exempt from regulation. The final vote was 23-9 following a 90-minute debate.

“I’m excited that the legislature has taken a giant step forward in protecting the children of this state, regardless of where they’re located,” Rep. Keri Ingle, D-Lee’s Summit, who first pushed for legislative action, told The Star after the vote. “The survivors of abuse who have fought so hard to prevent other children from experiencing the same trauma they’ve endured deserve all the credit for their advocacy and work.

The bill previously passed the state house unanimously. The state senate amended it, so it goes back to the house.

If I were in charge of such things there would be no religious exemptions period. Especially for school attendance. Public health should be the primary concern, not religion. Why this is even a thing is still outside of my ability to understand.

Having a special exemption for beliefs that are not supported by evidence if we call them “religion” was never a good idea, but people are not rational.

Since leaving the employ of the County for my little City, I haven’t had to deal with any of those nutters. They were distressingly common in the County. I’ve since learned that some of their online groups suggest moving here based on a perceived friendliness to their absurd views.

I mean, for proper sovereign-citizen conspiracy-theory woo-woo, you’re supposed to throw in a cite about the fringe, right?

Or does “fringe right” just explain it all…?

When you come to the realization that many people around you are dimmer than a poorly lit theater, you’ll experience an epiphany of fear akin to rowing in a life-raft in the face of a hurricane.

And I’m not even suggesting malice here. The malicious ones are in their own category of what to fear.

I don’t intend to be mean. Yet some of the most obvious things seem to escape people, and I don’t know why.

Also, I don’t believe “intelligence quota” is a meaningful idea. Life is full of aspects that just are not tested on the usual IQ tests.

Still, I think the underlying problem (putting aside our long-term shrinkage of brain sizes due to domestication) is that we humans are first emotional, and only secondarily rational.

People who talk about ideas, rather than mindless gossip generally have an IQ score of 115 or better. That’s not a large segment of the population.

I’m not a big believer in IQ meaning much, despite (or perhaps because) I test very far on the right side of the curve. There seem to be much better indicators for both “success” and happiness/satisfaction that this one particular test.

So do I, and I know that motivation and positive attitude will lead to success and happiness better than being smart will. Understanding society and the world is a burden. It’s all about watching people do things that you know are stupid and destructive, having the majority go along with it, and then having the outcome occur exactly as expected.

re: #56 Eclectic Cyborg

Many major retailers and other places around here (Academy Sports, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, most gas stations) have taken down the “Mask required” signs from their front doors.

Other stores that do still have them up (Dollar Tree, Dollar General) aren’t bothering to enforce them, apparently not even with their own staff.

I was at Academy yesterday picking something up and I was the ONLY white person in there (aside from some employees) wearing a mask.

Only some of the upper scale places (Target, some supermarkets) are still requiring and enforcing mask usage.

I was in an REI, Staples, and a Wegmans today in eastern PA. All still had their “mask required” signs up and had employees wearing masks. REI also had spacing marked out, especially in the shoes/boots area and sort of limited customers handling the merchandise there. Plus a requirement that you have and use your own socks for trying on boots. Customers were still masking as well without complaint.

Without the ability to reason, no amount of skill at taking tests will help.
They are biased tests that are made for a white suburbanite like me, but you do need to be able to think logically and apply it to the test.

You can be a logical thinker that does well on the test, but has a motivation deficit, depression, or anxiety, and not go as far in life as the test would have led someone to expect.

Hey now! I feel attacked! But seriously, that describes me to a tee. I’m a 43 year old while male who grew up middle class. Undiagnosed Type 2 Bipolar and lack of any real guidance in my youth have rendered me quite the underachiever. I’ve come to terms with it, but I do sometimes wonder what better attention in my youth might have done for me.

Heh, I was pretty much describing myself, but I have managed to make it to a nice salary, thanks to IT work paying well. I did not make it to college because of the depression and anxiety, and could have done a lot more in life.
